No, this isn’t a name of a personal acquaintance. And, judging by his blog, this is unfortunate. Follow the life of Brian as he unfolds the story on what it’s like to live in L.A. and interview celebrities for a living.

A Date on Christmas Eve with SPSS
24 12 2008For those who are unaware of what SPSS is, it is a statistics program available on PCs or Macs, and it’s what I am currently sitting in front of during Christmas Eve. From my biking accident, I received a 3 week extension on all my reports and essays for the previous term which I am grateful for, but am wishing (aside from the pain) that the accident had not occurred, for had it not, I would be sitting in front of something perhaps a little more entertaining. Still, it needs to be done and there are hardly enough days left to have it complete before 2009, and so off to work I go.

SPSS - My Christmas Companion
This may sound like a quote from Dicken’s A Christmas Carol (Scrooge), but has the novelty of Christmas worn off as you get older? Don’t get me wrong, the idea of Christmas is lovely, families rejoining for a meal around the table, exchanging gifts to find something you’ve always wanted, and something you despise. But, nowadays, Christmas is all too commercial, and although that may be very entertaining, the actual itself does not hold itself up to the exciting run up anymore. You wake up early on Christmas morning to open your presents the fictional character Santa has brought you, and many other excited children around the Christian world. Then… you sit in front of the telly and watch the traditional Mary Poppins for the fifth year in a row (not to mention Chitty Chitty Bang Bang as well…). You await dinner and predictably, there lies a turkey with a mixture of vegetation stuffed up it’s second hole. I personally think that Christmas needs to live up to it’s December run up and not be such a disappointment. There needs to be variation, excitement and entertainment. For those visiting or receiving big families for the holidays, I’m sure it’s wonderful. But for others, it’s a hard and a less entertaining holiday which needs to change. Christmas needs to be for all. Christmas needs to change.
And so, this is why I aim to get all the reports and essays done by the end of the week (unlikely perhaps, but at least most of it done). Maybe a boring way to spend it, but I myself treat it like any other day. Well… until something changes otherwise. And, with the money Christmas Day offers, I’d be happy to go to work for the day and be back home in time for dinner. What’s wrong with that? What is there to do during the day? On that note… I’m off.
Christmas – what a splendid day indeed.
