They Spin You Right Round

30 12 2008

The past 2 days, I have been subjected to two different horrific fun fair rides by two different people. I am not a big fan myself of getting into machines that spin you round and round, and tip you on your side at a very fast speed. Especially with what seems like a faulty safety bar.

The Waltzer

The Waltzer

The first ride was very similar to the Waltzer. My friend practically forced me to purchase a ticket to go on this ride with her. We’re currently on talking terms, surprisingly! So, I step in, and so does she, but the safety bar doesn’t seem to go down very far. We still decide not to mention anything and soon enough the ride starts going. OK, I thought. It’s not too bad. It’s fairly quick but it’s not like it’s tipping me over. But then, I hear an evil man over the microphone suggesting it should go faster…. and so it does, resulting in me being tipped over at a very fast speed, in 90 degrees to the ground. Joy. I hobbled off the ride, shaken all over. But, this isn’t the last of what I hope is the end of fun fair rides such as these.

The next day, I meet up with another friend and we go out for a meal. We eat happily, as she struggles with the chopsticks. Then the bill comes, and we have to decide what to do next before being kicked out into the cold. And so, she suggests the fun fair, but in a different location. Reluctantly I go, hoping just to go on the carousel. We first go on the dodgems which I am happy with as I love driving the carts around. And then she spots The Waltzer. Second Joy! She pleads and pleads and eventually I say yes. I pay my extortionate £2.50 ($3.61, €2.56, ¥325.45 in today’s current economy. I try to relate things appropriately) and get in a cart. Once again, I hold on for dear life as the feeling of my face almost being torn from my head is experienced. Not an ideal experience in London I must say.

The Most Haunted Place in London

The scariest attraction in London

The scariest attraction in London

This is apparently The London Tombs, located underneath London Bridge. It is where many were buried, dying from The Black Plague. Defined as London’s scariest attraction, I decided to take a peek.

My friend had suggested we go there together, and so I decided not to have much to eat. We got in and were greeted by a London Dungeon deja vu. We went in room by room, through the ages, as each person told us a little history of London Bridge on a timeline. Nothing scary about that… But then we were invited to go into the tombs for the second half. Having come this far and not been scared just yet, we couldn’t just leave. And so we went…

Think 28 Days Later coming to life, as zombies attacked you left, right and centre. Of course, they didn’t touch a single hair on us, but the noises and jumps were scary enough. Not to mention the claustrophobic “Big Squeeze” we had to fit through inch by inch. Most definitely not for the faint-hearted. A lot scarier than the dungeons indeed.
